5 SALT LAKE CITY PIZZA PLACES TO TRY
No need to fly across the country for great pizza, we’ve got everything you need right here in the valley. Salt Lake City is home to several mouth-watering pizza joints that will make you forget you’re buying it at the base of the mountains & not the Empire State Building. Get ready to dig in, because we’ve rounded up our five favorite places to get a slice in Salt Lake.
The Pie Pizzeria
Can you write a SLC pizza list without featuring The Pie? We think not… which is why it’s first up! The OG crowd might still be loyal to the original location by the University of Utah, but The Pie now has half a dozen locations around town. Diners have the option of a gluten-free crust (that some swear is just as good as the original), or their famous in-house spicy dough, ApocalyptDough. Experts in making the classics, The Pie Pizzeria also offers specialty pies with flavor combos that keep you coming back for more. Try a Bacon-Berry pie for an unusual salty-sweet combo that somehow works, or a Wise Guy pie to channel your favorite old-time gangster.
Villagio Pizzeria
Owner Ricci Rondinelli brings authentic New York-style pizza to Salt Lake by way of Villagio Pizzeria. Villagio Pizzeria’s menu is full of authentic Italian flavors that are inspired by Rondinelli’s “Nona” and her Calabrian and Napolitano recipes. Grab a slice or a whole pie, and get the distinct New York thin crust experience every time. HOT TIP: Do us a favor and get the sausage, either as an add-on to Nona’s Lasagna pie or on the San Gennaro pie. It’s unforgettable.
Este Pizzeria
You want pineapple on your pizza? No judgment from us. But Este Pizzeria? Well… they’ll judge you. In fact, they have such strong opinions on it, they’re known for specifically NOT allowing pineapple on pizza. The rest of the menu more than makes up for it though. With multiple vegan options, a lasagna pizza, their famous meat lovers pie (The Clay), and a homage to the old country (the Italian Flag, complete with pizza sauce, ricotta, and pesto stripes), their flavors are bold and imaginative. Add an order or two of their garlic knots for a deliciously garlicky and doughy experience.
The Pie Hole
Three words: Potato Bacon Pizza. If you’re intrigued (and we know you are), make your way over to the Pie Hole, Salt Lake’s favorite late-night pizza joint. Order by the slice at the counter, where you can order several different slices from their creative menu. Canadian bacon, pineapple, and jalapenos top Drunk Candy, while Munchy Mango is drizzled with Thai peanut sauce over mangos and brown sugar-roasted jalapenos. The rest of the menu is just as eclectic, alongside some fave classics like cheese or pepperoni. Though many have only experienced the Pie Hole late at night (ahem, after the bars have closed), it’s worth stopping by in the light of day to grab a slice or two as you wander around Downtown.
Big Apple Pizzeria
Before other New York style pizzerias made their way to our city, Big Apple was one of the originals. Pizza lovers swarm to Big Apple Pizza for their deliciously thin and crispy New York style pizzas topped with classic toppings. Their hand-thrown dough is topped with their signature tomato sauce and incredibly fresh ingredients like artichoke hearts, Italian meatballs, and jalapenos. Whether you create your own unique pizza, or order any of their can’t-miss options from the menu, finish off with a garlic knot for the ultimate meal.
